And the bells are ringing out...

For the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, hand-ringing of the bells of Kirkwall's magnificent St Magnus Cathedral has begun again. The three ancient bells of the Norse cathedral were traditionally rung every Sunday morning to welcome the congregation to the service. That practice has only just restarted, allowing a familiar sound to fill the sky around the town once more. Us...
Seagrass: Orkney's underwater carbon store

Did you know that seagrass, found in shallow sheltered bays, is a 'super habitat' that can help in the fight against climate change? Seagrass is widely distributed around Orkney, with good seagrass beds to be found in the north isles, as well as around areas of the west and east mainland. One of the most important roles of seagrass is providing a nursery area for juvenile fish, many of which go...

They say the Orkney winter is ferocious. Is it the temperature that's bad or the wind? I would have assumed the wind of course, given that it's a very low-lying archipelago but is the weather itself terribly different from mainland Scotland? I've heard it compared to Aberdonian winter.

Thank You !! We vacationed to Orkney (and Shetland) in the very early 2000's. There was virtually no internet back then so we based the entire trip on 3 lines of text in a hard copy travel guide that dedicated an entire 3 paragraphs to the Highlands and Islands. This was easily the most memorable vacation of my life and we loved every second. We never got off the Mainland, but enjoyed so many spectacular hiking locations in the mid-summer light - forcing ourselves to end hikes 1:00AM to get some kip, and listening to the sheep all "night". I would so love to return....

My Clark kinsmen emigrated to America from Orkney South Ronaldsay. They were Shepherds and sheep was their primary livelihood for years. Later on in the 1870s they packed up their ox carts and came over to rural Carter County Tennessee from Valle Cruces,Watuaga County North Carolina. We are descendants of nearly if not all the Gaelic peoples.. My mom's immediate family are the Guinns(Gwynns) they were of Welsh descended. My grand pap stood a whole 5 feet tall skinny as a rail fence in his elder years but still had the heart of a true welshman. He just always told us wee'uns when we ask him where did our kinsmen come from.He would tell us from God like everybody else. My older cousin Newton (Bud) Clark would put on The Clark Clan Tartan, kilt, and the hole get up and play the bagpipes a certain time of the year.

My family surname is Louttit. My great-great grandfather (all the way up the patrilinial line) came from these Orkney Islands (I don't know exact details). Not sure if his name either, but he came with the HBC. There's a spiral-bound book titled The Louttit Saga; I pray to G-d that I can find it in storage!

Almost forgot, this man came with the HBC in the mid to late 1800's and worked and settled in James Bay, in the Ontario coast of James Bay. His descendants are Cree indigenous people, including myself (I reside in Ontario) 😊✌️☮️
